Now, the Good News

What they also found, however, was that when these same obese and overweight people ate breakfasts and lunches high in protein, they burned off more fat following those meals than obese and overweight people who ate lower-protein breakfasts and lunches. And this applied to men and women both.

Apparently, these researchers found, the extra protein somehow modified that deficit in fat-burning capabilities that overweight and obese men and women for some reason possess.

What's more, the study found that after a high-protein meal, people with a higher proportion of body fat actually burn fat better than people who have a lower proportion of body fat do.

Previous Research Backs Up Argument For Protein For Weight-Loss

Previous studies looking at what to eat to lose weight have surmised that one of the reasons that diets high in protein help people to lose weight easier than other types of diets is that protein is a better appetite suppressant than carbohydrates or fats.

What to Eat to Lose Weight And What NOT to Eat

The so-called "high protein diets" used in this study were comprised of the following protein sources:

o lean meats
o low-fat dairy products
o eggs

And these protein sources were then supplemented by carbohydrates in the forms of bread and vegetables. Apparently, and predictably, no additional fat sources were included in these high-protein meals.

So if you're looking to emulate the results found in this study, one important recommendation is that you start paying closer attention not only to how much protein you eat in comparison to fats and carbohydrates, but that you pick those sources of protein carefully, leaning towards poultry, fish, and low-fat diary, supplemented by more nuts and beans.

Now That They've Told Us What to Eat to Lose Weight What Comes Next?

Although this most recent, Austrian study did not examine weight-loss in general, it appears that will be the next focus of their follow-up research.

Another follow-up study these same researchers are now conducting based on these finding is whether or not a diet containing purely vegetarian protein sources produces the same, or similar, results.
